What is Mange and What Causes It? Mange is a skin disorder caused by parasitic mites.

There are two types: Demodectic mange (also known as red mange) and Sarcoptic mange, sometimes called scabies. Demodectic mange, the most common type, is less severe than Sarcoptic mange and is not contagious. It’s an inflammatory response to a mite that lives on the skin and hair follicles of nearly all dogs, usually without causing problems. However, a compromised immune system or an unusual spike in the mite’s population can lead to irritation—this is Demodectic mange. While complications and further infection occur in rare cases, Demodectic mange normally resolves fairly quickly without requiring treatment.

Sarcoptic Mange, however, is highly contagious, and can affect dogs, cats, pigs, horses and even humans (human infestation is known as scabies). It’s caused by a mite that burrows into the skin, resulting in intense, often painful itching. Skin damage, hair loss, and scabs are all common in Sarcoptic mange. Complications are more common with this type of mange, and it’s usually much harder to get rid of, as it’s easily passed between people, pets and places that have become infested with the scabies mite.

What Are the Symptoms? Mange symptoms vary somewhat depending on the type. Hair loss is more common with Demodectic mange, for example, and Sarcoptic mange tends to cause more intense itching, and is normally located on the ears, face, legs and elbows. But in general, the following symptoms are seen in both forms of mange: Hair loss and bald spots Scabs Sores Redness or crusting of the skin Moderate to severe scratching Restlessness

How Can I Prevent Mange? Methods for preventing mange will depend on the type. Demodectic mange can normally be prevented by keeping your pet clean and healthy. Basic hygiene and a balanced diet are almost always sufficient (in general, choose fresh, organic options over pre-packaged foods). Sarcoptic mange is another issue entirely. Many of the same methods used to repel fleas and ticks can be used for scabies mites—such as regularly cleaning bedding and practicing basic pest prevention. Again, Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious, so limiting possible points of exposure is essential. Similarly, if your pet contracts scabies mites, you’ll need to isolate them, to keep them from infesting other animals and your home.

What to Do if Your Pet Has Mange First thing’s first: Take them to a veterinarian. A vet will use skin scrapings to verify a mite diagnosis. Also, a vet visit is important to rule out and prevent secondary infections from taking hold. When at all possible, natural methods are our preferred approach, as they can be both effective and non-toxic. However, never employ natural options instead of consulting a vet, do so only in conjunction with their professional advice.

    Natural Tips for dealing Mange:

    Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is said to relieve itching and kill mange-causing mites. Its antiseptic and antibacterial properties can also help regulate pH levels, which will in turn aid in the healing of damaged skin. You can apply ACV directly to affected areas using a spray bottle, or if the issue is widespread, you can apply all over as a post-bath treatment. Allow the ACV to air dry. Do not use on pets with raw or otherwise damaged skin.

Natural, pet-friendly bug repellents, like Cedarcide Original, can help keep mites at bay. Apply to both your pet and yourself before enjoying outdoor activities, like visiting the dog park or hiking, to deter biting pests—including mites, fleas, ticks and mosquito

A Natural Honey ie.(Manuka 10+)is said to help clean and relieve the sores caused by mange. Apply it directly to affected areas using a cotton ball or other gentle applicator.

Biteback Sweet Relief Cream for removing mites.

A highly effective topical repellent cream for keeping your dog's skin calm and scab-free. Biteback Sweet Relief is formulated from gentle natural repellent ingredients that remove the causes of itching, thus calming and soothing the skin, keeping it healthy and the hair growing normally. It also kills mites (a major cause of itching) and lice, if they are present.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use Cedarcide Original on my cat?

Because cats like to lick their fur, and because they’re extremely sensitive to scents, it’s best to test for possible sensitivity with a light initial application. While Cedarcide Original is non-toxic, on rare occasions smaller cats and kittens have found the natural cedar scent of Cedarcide Original too strong for their liking.

If like most individuals, your cat takes no issue with Cedarcide Original, apply the formula by lightly misting your hands and massaging the spray into their coat. Be sure to apply Cedarcide Original all over—including armpits, in between toes, and around the ears and tail.

What do your products smell like?

Our products are toxin-free, so don't worry—there’s no nasty chemical odors. As you might have guessed from our brand name, nearly all our products have a natural cedar oil smell.

Can I fog with your products?

Of course! Fogging is often the best option when facing serious pest control issues. We recently improved our Cedarcide Original formula to increase its efficacy, which means it’s now slightly more dense. Because of this change, we advise using only a half gallon of Cedarcide Original when fogging, as opposed to the previous suggestion of just under a gallon. With the increased efficacy and lasting power, you can also expect a little more cleanup compared to the previous formula.

Natural Enzymes.UK. Do not sell foggers or take any responsibility of miss use of Cedarcide when used in a fogger. Always follow the foggers insuctions and never use near open flames. Cedarcide is an oil and it is flammable.

    Where are your products made?

All of our products are handcrafted and American made at our offices here in Lewisville, TX.

What’s the difference between Cedarcide Original and Tickshield?

Both products are naturally sourced insecticides & repellents designed for personal, pet and home use. Tickshield is simply an extra strength version of Cedarcide Original. (Because it’s a stronger formula, Tickshield should not be used on cats, smaller dogs, or animals under 20 lbs.). For more info, watch the video here.

Which product do I use on myself?

We offer two naturally sourced repellents for personal use: Cedarcide Original, and its extra strength counterpart, Tickshield (Tickshield is recommended for hikers, campers and other outdoorsman in need of added protection).

Which product is for indoor use?

Cedarcide Original is our naturally sourced pesticide and repellent for indoor use.

Which product do I use for my pet?

Cedarcide Original is our most popular product for protecting pets from pests like fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Our other pet specific products can be found here.

What type of cedarwood oil do you use?

We use highly refined Texas cedarwood oil. Our cedarwood oil never contains phenols or phenolic compouds.

Can I use Cedarcide products on my small animal, birds or reptiles?

Our products are not designed for pets smaller than cats, so we advise against using them on such animals. Cedarwood oil, the core ingredient in most of our products, can be harmful to birds and reptiles, so please do not use Cedarcide products for this application

Is Cedarcide Original safe for Birds?

Answer: No! We love animals here at Natural Enzymes. And not just common pets like dogs, cats and horses—we love them all. In fact, protecting animals and the environment from the toxic effects of traditional pesticides is a big part of what inspires us to do what we do.

Because many of our customers are bird owners or use our products for agricultural reasons, we’re sometimes asked,

“Is cedar oil toxic to birds?”

The answer is yes—but it’s a little complicated. While we have customers who use our products to treat outdoor chicken coops and cages, our products are not formulated for birds, and therefore we suggest you do not use them on or for birds. When applied directly or otherwise used incorrectly, cedar oil can be toxic, even deadly to birds.
